Hockey : Punjab Behind India’s Victory “All Three Goals Made by Punjab Players”, Punjab CM

As the Indian men’s hockey team resurrected a glorious past by reaching the semifinals of the Olympic Games for the first time in 49 years, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh twitted Panjab’s part in the victory has a lion share.

Very soon the national team made it to the semifinals of the Tokyo Olympics, it sparked a social media frenzy. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh took to Twitter after the Iteam’s magnificent victory. He pointed out that all three goals were scored by players from his state Punjab.

“Stellar performance by the Indian Men’s Hockey team at #TokyoOlympics to beat Great Britain by 3-1 and entered Olympic top 4 teams after 41 years. Happy to note that all 3 goals were scored by Punjab players Dilpreet Singh, Gurjant Singh and Hardik Singh. Congratulations. Go for Gold!,” tweeted the Punjab CM.

In quarterfinals in Tokyo on Sunday, India defeated Great Britain by 3-1 goal, that put the team within striking distance of a medal it has been chasing for more than four decades. The team’s coach is Australia’s Graham Reid.

Dilpreet Singh (seventh minute), Gurjant Singh (16th minute), and Hardik Singh (57th minute) scored three field goals for the eight-time former Olympic champions.

Sam Ward scored the lone goal for Great Britain in the 45th minute from a penalty corner.

India last appeared in the Olympics semifinals in 1972 when fell by 0-2 goal to arch-rivals Pakistan at the Munich Games.

Indian team’s defenders and goalkeeper PR Sreejesh must be commended for the victory since they absorbed Great Britain’s pressure and stopped British forwards’ repeated attacks.

The semifinal will be held on Tuesday with India taking on World Champions Belgium, if won the team will qualify for the final for the first time since winning its eighth and last Olympic gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Games.
