“Namma Metro” Not Yet on “Profitable Tracks”, Income Not Reaching Expenditure

Despite restarted the commercial services after post covid, the ” Namma Metro” train services at Bengaluru not yet returned ‘profitable track’, it’s current income not reaching to the expenditure.

According to Bengaluru Namma Metro Railway Corporation Ltd MD Anjum Parvez, average 4.5 people used to travel everyday before the covid, the covid uprooted the income, now the income level not even touching to the expenditure.

Operations and Managing department Executive Director AS Shankar said : Earlier, the metro used to earn income nearly about Rs 35 crore per month of which expenditure was between Rs 25 crore to Rs 28 crore per month, and saving was about Rs 10 crore. However, now the monthly income not exceeding Rs 15 crore while the expenditure limit remained as usual earlier.

The non-ticket income to the corporation has also declined. Most of the commercial establishments in stations though allowed not yet reopened. Earlier, the corporation used to get income also from advertisements on the concrete polls of the bridges, however, its too not working with the advertisements policy of BBMP, MD Parvez said.

He hoped that the income may increase as many companies which instructed its employees to work from home are now steadily calling them to office and many more may follow the same from Nov 1 and the life turning to normalcy with reopeing of primary schools.

The metro users number has reduced to 2.2 lakh against 6.5 lakh. The metro has a record of travelling highest 4, 58, 238 passengers on Oct 30, 2019. The metro was stopped during the lockdowns and reopening in phases with strict covid norms and in reduced time.
