The last rites of contractor Santosh Patil who allegedly ended his life by hanging at a lodge at Udupi two days ago was burried at his family agriculture field at Badas village in Belagavi taluk on Thursday morning.
The Congress workers including Belagavi Rural MLA Laxmi Hebbalkar, her brother MLC Channaraj Hattiholi and other workers opposed for conducting the last rites until the kins of Santosh were given suitable compensation. However, they allowed to carryout the further procedure after the elders of the Lingayat community convinced them.
The villagers had opposed for Congress and the relatives disagree to conduct the funeral as the village has three marriages today. The body of Santosh was brought to the field in a procession and held the last rites as per Lingayat rituals.
Santosh who was a supporter of BJP completed 108 pitty civil works allotted orally by Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister KS Eshwarappa. The cost of the work done was Rs 4 crore, however, Santosh had alleged that the minister was demanding 40% of the cost that comes to the tune of Rs 1.60 crore as commission to him if wanted the bills be cleared.
Santosh who had completed the works by borrowing loan and also pledging the gold ornaments of his wife brought the commission demand to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Party National President JP Nadda and Central Rural Development minister.
However, after writing to PM, Santosh was said to be harassed mentally by Eshwarappa’s supporters. Santosh went to Udupi to meet Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, who had meetings there, to bring him the commission issue, however, ended his life by hanging at a lodge he booked as he couldn’t meet the former.
