The medal winner PAK Javelian Nadeem finished with 84.62m in the OlympicIndian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra created history in Tokyo Olympics 2020 by bagging India’s first medal in athletics at the quadrennial event – where he won a gold medal in the javelin men’s throw final on August 7.
Chopra created history by becoming the second Indian athlete after Abhinav Bindra to clinch an individual gold medal in the showpiece event, wishes poured in from all corners, a tweet surfaced online which seemed to be from the account of Pakistani Javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem.
“Congratulations to my Idol #NeerajChopra for winning Sorry Pakistan I could not win for you. #ArshadNadeem,” the tweet read from the Twitter account @ArshadNadeemPak.
The tweet went viral in no time with fans lauding Nadeem’s gesture. However, the tweet was later deleted. It has turned out that Nadeem did not wish Chopra on his gold medal.
Tokyo 2020, Nadeem was Pakistan’s biggest medal hope but his best throw of 84.62 wasn’t good enough for a medal. Chopra, who had finished the qualifying round at No.1 spot with an 86.59m throw, won gold with a best throw of 87.58. Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch bagged the silver medal with a throw of 86.67 and Vitezslav Vesely, another athlete from the Czech Republic, won the bronze medal with a best throw of 85.44.
