Two Afghan Journalists Beaten for Covering Women’s Protest

Two Afghan journalists reported the women’s protests in Kabul were detained and beaten badly by Taliban security forces on Tuesday.

The Human Rights Watch said journalists Taqi Daryabi and Nemat Naqdi, from the Kabul-based media house Etilaat-e Roz, were allegedly detained and attacked on Tuesday. The reporters covered the protests of women in Kabul demanding an end to Taliban violations of the rights of women and girls.

Etilaat-e Roz reported that Taliban authorities allegedly took its two reporters to a police station in Kabul, placed them in separate cells, and severely beat them with cables. Both men were released on Wednesday, September 8, who later got treated at a hospital. They got injuries to their backs and faces.

Human Rights Watch reported the Taliban authorities detained a Tolonews photojournalist, Wahid Ahmadi, on Tuesday, September 7, confiscated his camera and released him. They also prevented other journalists from filming the protest.

Women marched at Kabul demanding their freedoms are guaranteed under the new Islamist regime. The Taliban have pledged to protect women’s rights in accordance with Islamic law.
