Satteppa SK, a soldier in Border Security Force (BSF) who killed five of his colleague and ended his life by shooting himself at Punjab’s Amritsar on Sunday was from Hosavantamuri village in Hukkeri taluk of Belagavi district.
He was said to be suffering with mental disorder for which he was taking medicine.
Satteppa was upset with his duty hours. It has not been ascertained whether Satteppa shot himself, or someone else fired at him.
Apart from Satteppa, the personnel who were killed are head constables Ram Binod, DS Toraskar, Rattan Singh and Baljinder Kumar. While Satteppa hailed from Karnataka, the four others were from Bihar, Maharashtra, Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana.
The incident took place between 9.30am and 9.45am at the Border Security Force battalion in Amritsar’s Khasa area. The locality is only 20 kilometres from the Attari-Wagah border crossing between India and Pakistan.
A court of inquiry has been ordered, the Border Security Force said.
