A rasta-roko protest was held on July 03 and was attended in huge numbers by the affected people of Khanapur taluka. The National Highway (NH 4A) connecting Belgaum to Goa via Khanapur has been in a terrible state for more than two years and the road work remains incomplete to this day.
People of 40 villages have been affected between Goa-Nandgad cross to Ram Nagar in Uttara Kannada (UK) district, Karnataka. The current situation has worsened with the onset of the monsoons. The Environment and Forest department are also too be blamed for the pitiable state of the road.People’s lives have no value and during this lockdown, as they were put to severe hardship while traveling on the same stretch to get medical attention for their near and dear ones. The state BJP and the central government have given false assurances to the general public. The Project Manager of the road construction company too is not behaving responsibly and taking action. The Khanapur Congress MLA, Dr. Anjalitai Nimbalkar, with the affected people led a Rasta-roko protest from Goa- Nandagad cross and sat in protest with her supporters at Rumewadi cross demanding good road for the people. She spoke in both Kannada and Marathi language and said that the road should be repaired at the earliest.
She requested the concerned authorities and the local administration to complete the pending road work. She demanded that they should give in writing and at least do patch work for two wheel vehicles to move smoothly. Adding further, she cautioned that
“we would continue our fight till we get justice” and would again protest if the genuine demands of the people were not addressed and met.
The affected people from neighbouring villages participated in good numbers.
